Turmeric & Curcumin: Why Potency and Standardization Matter

Not all turmeric is equal. The difference between raw powder and a 95% standardized extract is the difference between a spice and a supplement active.

Turmeric & Curcumin: Why Potency and Standardization Matter

Turmeric has moved from the spice rack to the supplement aisle — but there is a world of difference between culinary turmeric and a standardized extract built for formulation.

Raw powder vs standardized extract

Raw turmeric powder contains only about 2–5% curcuminoids, the group of actives responsible for its studied properties. A 95% standardized extract concentrates those actives dramatically, letting you deliver a precise, label-claim dose in a small capsule.

Why standardization matters

Standardization means every batch is verified — typically by HPLC — to contain the stated percentage of curcuminoids. Without it, potency swings batch to batch and your finished product cannot make reproducible claims.

Purity and testing

Premium extracts are tested for heavy metals, pesticides and residual solvents. Sourcing and testing transparency separate a supplement-grade active from a commodity powder.

Formulation notes

Curcumin is fat-soluble and poorly absorbed on its own. Formulators often pair it with piperine (black pepper) or lipid-based delivery systems to improve bioavailability. Start with a high-potency, verified 95% extract — everything else builds on that foundation.
